Black Friday

A one-day event that seems to have now taken over the whole month of November. Where big businesses try to get you to spend lot of money with them for quite probably items that you don’t even need! I am being quite blunt here, but you may have guessed that I’m not a fan.

And then there’s the packaging to consider, all those large boxes, filled with unsustainable packaging and normally lots of plastic involved too.

I’ve chosen to source gifts from businesses who care and two of them have recently taken steps to reflect on their packaging. Galloway Lodge Preserves have stepped away from the shrink wrapper and all their jars are now boxed so no plastic here. They also started a subscription service this year which I’ve already used for a gift and I will be using again soon.

A big shout out also to Walter Gregor’s Tonic Water who have only just launched their online shop, in time for the festive season. One of the reasons that they have taken until now to launch is that they spent time to develop packaging for their glass bottles that was robust but also sustainable.

Here are just two business that care about their businesses but also about the environment too. So my plea to you is that this Black Friday how about supporting the small independent producers like these two. The ones that work all hours, have no social life, miss family occasions and work till midnight to give you quality products. The ones that also where possible source their raw materials from other small producers, to help them too. They can’t afford to compete with the big multiples so can’t do Black Friday deals but what they can do is provide you with quality products made with passion and pride.
